Safe Families Alaska

A letter from the Director, April 25th 2025

THANK YOU  for volunteering with Safe Families!

I'm continually humbled by the ways y'all are willing to come alongside our community. Yesterday, a Family Coach Supervisor had to explain over and over again to a mom that Safe Families was free. The young mother, freshly out of her foster home,  protested that there must be some government program paying you all. After a while she gave up and said, "I've never met anyone who was that nice. Maybe one of my oncology nurses, they are sometimes very nice."

Y'all are really nice, but Jesus is nicer still, and it's your continual and sacrificial hospitality that allows His light to shine into these families' darkest moments.

Last year at this time you had opened your homes 47 times and sheltered children for 205 days or nights.

This year you have opened your homes 60 times for a total of 224 days... in only 17 weeks.

That's 2 children per day! And that is only counting requests that we can find matches for.

If you are weary, it is with good reason.

And the hospitals are still calling.

The Cold Weather Shelters are closing May 1st.

The need is real—and it can feel overwhelming.

This week, I found myself feeling hopeless and asking why in the face of it all. I looked at the two little girls trying to peel oranges in my kitchen while two more requests came in by phone.

Thank you for all you've done and continue to do for Alaskan families.

In John 9, the disciples are also overwhelmed with the never-ending parade of people in need. They ask Jesus "who's sin caused this man's blindness?" In verse 4, He redirects their question. The question should not be "why?" or "how do we avoid this in the future?" or even "who is to be punished for this?" The question Christ wants them to ask when they see the need is "What does God want me to do today?"

So today, I'm focusing on what God wants from me right now. I can't host all these kids and neither can you.

What I can do today is ask you:

  • Do you know someone who might make a great host home?

  • Is there someone at your church or small group that you would be willing to be a reference for?

Encourage them to apply at beaconhillak.com/apply, or to reach out to our Onboarding Specialist Teaque (907-744-4776 / TEAQUE@beaconhillak.com)  or offer to go with them to the next Connections & Questions on May 19th

Maybe you could support each other by splitting up the daytime care needs of a hosting. We would love to get creative.

And Pray.

Please pray for these families, for yours that open their homes, for the ones that have to leave their homes, and the ones looking for new homes.

Pray we would all be driven to the comfort of our Savior, Jesus. Whose hospitality exceeds and inspires ours.

On behalf of the mothers we talk to that have never met anyone as nice as you, THANK YOU.
